Reader’s Question:

Is it more expensive to get sports-utility vehicle car insurance than a regular four-door sedan? My family is growing and an SUV seems to be more practical as a family car.

When you get car insurance, one of the first things a provider does is to classify the vehicle using the vehicle identification number and to consider the likelihood of it being vandalized, get mixed up in an accident, or stolen. Once the vehicle car insurance provider decides, your sports-utility vehicle car insurance would be assessed mainly for two things: cost and size. This is because it would be more expensive to repair an SUV after it is involved in an accident than if you have a regular sedan. Moreover, since most SUVs are large and there really is no standard size for the type, then most likely, property damage and/or medical costs would be much larger. On the other hand, SUVs are not in the top ten of cars stolen, so the theft factor is not much. You could make sure that your SUV has the necessary safety features for added assurance against accidents.

The same process, by the way, applies to a regular sedan. Same factors are considered but the effect of each will be different from that of an SUV. Cost and size would not be as much as the theft factor since most models of cars stolen are sedans. So, if I were you, I would go for the vehicle that works best for my family.
